Nursing Facility Hit with Highest Fine Possible after Patient's Death
A nursing facility in Sacramento County has received the most severe citation under state law after a patient died of a massive morphine overdose in October.
Bruceville Terrace Skilled Nursing Facility north of Elk Grove has been fined $100,000, which is the highest fine the state can levy, after an investigation found that poor care led to the death of a 74-year-old resident on October 17.
According to the California Department of Health Services' report, the man was terminally ill with pulmonary disease and was supposed to receive a morphine drip to manage his pain with no more than 10 mg an hour. However, the nurse, who had reportedly never given a morphine infusion before, mistakenly gave the patient more than 120 milligrams over a period of two hours and 10 minutes. A second, more experienced nurse checked the drip and didn't catch the mistake, according to state records. After the drip lasting two hours and ten mintues, the man was found dead.
The report said the nurse knew she had made mistake in the medication but did not tell the patient's doctor or wife. Staff members didn't notify the doctor about the medication error until four days after the patient died. more on this at News10
